In this book, premature failures of cable bolts due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in underground environments were investigated, aimed to determine environmental factors responsible for SCC in cable bolts, understand the SCC failure mechanism and identify potential strategies to prevent SCC. The book contains 7 chapters including the literature review, environmental characterization, experimental methodologies, environmental factors responsible for SCC and full-size cable bolt tests. The methodologies developed here can be applied to study SCC in other reinforcement materials such as investigation of SCC potential of bridge and hoisting cables. The results can be used to develop guidelines to assess the underground environments causing susceptibility to SCC of high-carbon steel and set optimal support regimes in different geological and environmental conditions.
